This novelization was better than I thought it would be. Not only is it based on a movie, but it is apparently based on a historical event [with fantasy elements woven into the story]. It moved at a fast pace; at four hundred thirtysome pages, I finished it much sooner than I anticipated [which was okay with me; it was starting to reach the point when I was wondering how much longer before it was over].

It is crazy! It caught me by surprise; I kept anticipating Kai and Mika "riding off into the sunset", married and anticipating growing old together. Then, after Kai's death, I kept waiting to see that Mika had been impregnated with Kai's child and given birth to a son. Nothing like that. It just ends with her anticipating her death and entering the 'cycle of life' to hopefully one day be reunited with Kai, somewhen else.
It was a bittersweet ending [if you can call it that]. hide spoiler ] I know I said the character development was "interesting", but that might have been too generous.
Kai probably had the most development in terms of his character, book report 47 ronin, followed by Oishi. A lot of the characters introduced did not really have much development to them; I do not know if I would call them 'stock characters' because of the lack of development, but these characters really did not add much 'meaning' to the book report 47 ronin when they were "present" in the telling.
Not that it matters. I was kind of leery view spoiler [about the various demons and spirits in the story. I generally stay away from fantasy-oriented books, and I for sure usually avoid reading books involving demons [especially when they are portrayed in a 'positive' light, so I was definitely taking a chance reading this book.
Despite the "demonic elements" in it, book report 47 ronin, I did find myself "enjoying" it more than I thought I would. I think I can safely say I enjoyed most of it hide spoiler ]. view spoiler [I did like how Kai's and Mika's relationship developed over time, as it were.
They both restricted themselves because of their social positions, refusing to violate their positions or bring shame upon the family by indulging in their mutual feelings for each other. It could very easily have had a "modern twist" to it involving "forbidden love" and the consequences [or lack thereof] of their feelings being acted upon.
I thought it showed the strength of Kai's character than he continually put the good of his benefactor and her daughter above his own desires, book report 47 ronin, so that his benefactor would not book report 47 ronin face in Japanese society. It was definitely one of the better elements of the book.
